For this photoshoot, I began by making original sketches while listening to the album. I wanted to design something totally original, completely inspired by the artist’s music. I dreamed up a character who was half-human, half-deity, and used the earth and spirit elements I heard in the music. I wanted the audience to see this ethereal being come to life. The image chosen for the actual album cover was an original makeup look I designed using feathers in the eyelashes.
The location was in a forested area in the hills of Oakland, CA. The sunlight peaking through the ferns and redwoods was the perfect backdrop.

Wardrobe by Dela DeVille’s Vintage
The artist Erte has always been an inspiration to me. Elements of his dynamic art deco aesthetic have inspired my work over the decades. The bold lines and contrast in his illustrations catch the eye, and the images stick with you forever. It’s no wonder he illustrated the cover of Vogue so many times. Before there were supermodels, there was Erte. It’s timeless beauty.
I executed the aesthetic using a mood board by drawing from original illustrations to inspire hair, makeup, and costume. I wanted to create a simplified, modern version that was wearable. While location scouting, I viewed historical buildings to get the right background. I decided on the Chi Omega Greek Theater at the University of Arkansas, built in 1930. The wardrobe was from Dela Deville’s Vintage, a boutique in Springdale representing both vintage and modern pieces. Tonya Barnes was the perfect photographer for the project. She captured the look beautifully with carefully positioned lighting and well-chosen angles. Jessica Thorn’s features and expressions brought the look to life.
